This position is for a Personal Services Contract, not a full-time employee position. An individual signing a Personal Services Contract is not covered by the provisions of the Personnel Code. 20 ILCS 415 et seq. This individual agrees to be bound by and comply with the policies and procedures of the Agency. They are not entitled to any employment benefits such as paid sick, vacation, holiday or personal leaves; retirement contributions; health and life insurance; or access to Personnel Code or Civil Service grievance procedures. Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a Patient Advocate to ensure equitable treatment for transgender patients in correctional healthcare. The selected candidate will train staff on transgender healthcare and cultural sensitivity. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply. Essential Functions

• Patient Advocacy: Champion the rights and needs of transgender patients, ensuring they receive respectful and equitable treatment in all aspects of their healthcare within the correctional facility.
• Education: Provide and coordinate comprehensive education and training to staff and relevant personnel regarding transgender healthcare issues, including gender-affirming care, mental health concerns, and cultural sensitivity.
• Individualized Care: Collaborate with medical and mental health teams to develop and implement individualized healthcare plans for transgender patients, addressing their unique medical and mental health requirements.
• Resource Coordination: Assist transgender patients in accessing appropriate healthcare resources both within the facility and in external medical settings, including hormone therapy, mental health services, and specialized care.
• Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient information, respecting privacy and adhering to all relevant regulations and policies.

• Advocacy and Policy Development: Work with administrators to suggest or assist in development of policies related to treatment of transgender individuals in the correctional system.

• Community Engagement: Establish relationships with local LGBTQ+ organizations, advocacy groups, and social service agencies to enhance the support network available to transgender patients after release.

• Continuous Quality Improvement: Assist with gathering data and create corrective action plans.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor's degree in social work, healthcare, psychology, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
• Requires knowledge of transgender healthcare issues, including gender-affirming care, mental health, and legal rights.
• Requires strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Requires empathy, sensitivity, and cultural competence when working with diverse populations.
• Requires experience in patient advocacy, crisis intervention, or similar roles is highly desirable.
• Understanding of correctional systems and regulations is a plus.
• Requires commitment to upholding ethical standards and maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Requires ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently with minimal supervision.

• Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
• Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
