Description The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of Assistant City Attorney, which may be filled at a Senior Assistant City Attorney level depending on the candidate’s experience. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a solid legal background to play a key role in providing important services for our City and community. We are a relatively small office of five full-time lawyers, and strive for a collaborative working style that fosters harmonious relationships both within the office and among internal clients and members of the public.
Typical duties for both positions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Acting as senior counsel in handling serious, controversial, and complex legal matters; representing the City Attorney as assigned at City Council and other board, commission, or committee meetings and/or events as required, and rendering legal advice on agenda items; conferring with staff concerning legal issues and making appropriate decisions or recommendations; researching and preparing opinions, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, permits, and other legal documents; preparing and reviewing drafts, and assisting in negotiating proposed agreements; appearing before courts and administrative bodies to represent the City’s interest as required; and participating in the supervision, training, and evaluation of City Attorney staff. The Assistant City Attorney position is at-will and is exempt from the competitive service of the City.
Assignments are dependent upon the needs of the office as determined by the City Attorney. Assignments may include providing legal advice in multiple areas of municipal law such as transparency laws like the Brown Act, the Public Records Act and conflicts of interest laws; contracts; public utilities; finance; land use and environmental law; CEQA; and real estate law.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in multiple areas of municipal practice. They will be organized and efficient, confident and concise in providing legal advice in the public arena; will embrace the City’s emphasis on excellent customer service; and will be a hands-on and actively engaged team player who likes solving problems and enjoys working with City staff. The position calls for someone who is detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks, works fast, learns quickly, and exercises sound judgment within general policy guidelines and law. They will be a skillful communicator who is able to remain tactful and diplomatic in stressful or sensitive situations. The ideal candidate understands the importance of ensuring the City Attorney is fully informed on all work and remains courteous but objective in client interactions.
In addition, the successful candidate must interact well with others in a small office environment and must be committed to the service of the organization, as this is a full time job with established office hours, plus regular night meetings.
Ideally the candidate will have particular experience in land use matters - having handled controversial and complex land use applications including drafting and advising on various development transactions.
