*Position Overview:*The Music Department at Mt. San Antonio College serves both music and non-music majors through a wide range of instrumental ensembles. With a longstanding legacy of success, these ensembles are known for their excellence. In particular, Mt. SAC's Jazz Band has earned numerous prestigious accolades, including seven first place finishes at the Reno Jazz Festival, multiple DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards, and top honors at events such as the Western States Jazz Festival and the Route 66 Jazz Festival.??
In addition to directing a thriving and award-winning instrumental jazz ensemble, the *Professor of Music & Faculty Director of Instrumental Jazz and Athletic Bands *will provide leadership for the newly formed marching band-an exciting area for growth. This individual will bring vision, direction, and creativity to advance the instrumental music program, by* *fostering community, school spirit, and pride. We seek a versatile, passionate, and collaborative professional committed to the overall success of a vibrant instrumental music program on a large community college campus.
Mt. SAC has completed a large-scale recording studio project for our Audio Arts and Commercial Music programs, and this new studio will be networked with all indoor ensemble and performance spaces for high-quality, synchronized recordings. The new director will have the opportunity to integrate this advanced technology with ensembles, enhancing both performance and learning.
The mission of the Department is to provide the highest quality education, with equitable access for our diverse student population, in an environment that is inclusive and conducive to learning.
*Major Duties & Responsibilities:*
* Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent.
* Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record.
* Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.
* Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in department/division meetings and committees.
* Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies.
* Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.
* Effective oral and written communication with students.
* Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
* Participate in departmental and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities to maintain and improve the instructional program and to provide service to the college.
* In close cooperation with other discipline faculty, participate in the design, evaluation, revision, and development of culturally relevant curriculum, courses, and/or degrees.
* Serve as Director of the Instrumental Jazz program, including overseeing applied instruction. Direct the award-winning Mt SAC Jazz Ensemble.
* Direct the Mt. SAC Marching Band.
* Organize and direct at least one concert each semester with the Jazz Ensemble.
* Organize and direct the Marching Band practice and performance schedule in cooperation with Mt. SAC Athletics.
* Develop and oversee the various budget accounts that pertain to the respective ensemble disciplines.
* Actively recruit for the instrumental program in local schools and community organizations.
* Host Mt. SAC annual jazz festival, and other on-campus events such as a marching band competition.
* Plan and supervise student travel to national or international conferences or performance opportunities.
* Oversee publicity for ensembles.
* Prepare funding requests through Associated Students.
* Participate in instrumental juries and student recitals.
* Lead late-afternoon, evening, and weekend events, performances, and rehearsals, as required for ensembles.
* Work closely with the Director of Wind Ensemble to ensure the overall success of the instrumental program.
* Work cooperatively with colleagues to further the collective mission of the Music Department.
*Required Qualifications:*A. *The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:
*

* Master's degree in Music; *OR*
* Bachelor's degree in Music; *AND *a Master's degree in Humanities; *OR*
* The equivalent (must request an equivalency review in the application), *OR*
* California Community College credential, "Valid for Life" (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.);
*AND*

B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.*Preferred Quals Summary:*
* Ability to communicate curriculum meaningfully for students with diverse backgrounds.
* Established reputation - with regional and/or national honors - directing instrumental jazz ensembles, collegiate level preferred.
* Three years of experience directing a marching band, collegiate level preferred.
* Ability to teach additional music courses, in the areas of theory and musicianship, class piano, or general education courses, according to the needs of the department.
* Data-backed evidence of successful recruitment in a large and diverse collegiate instrumental program.
*Licenses and Other Requirements:*The incumbent may periodically be required to get to a variety of locations. If operating a vehicle, employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver's license.

*Conditions of Employment:**The person holding this position is required to be present on Mt. San Antonio College's campus to perform all essential duties and responsibilities.*

This is a full-time, tenure-track, *10-month contract position that begins in the 2025-26 academic year*. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.*Per Appendix A.4.i of the faculty collective bargaining agreement, *the District shall, at the time of initial salary schedule placement, determine whether the newly employed professor shall be placed on the Academic or Vocational salary track.
