Job Description

DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital, one of the premier veterinary hospitals in the country, is looking for a Senior Accountant to join our accounting team!

DoveLewis is one of the country's largest single-location veterinary hospitals. The non-profit, AAHA-accredited and VECCS Level 1-certified veterinary hospital has an annual revenue of $35 million, which includes revenue from medical services and donations. DoveLewis does not receive any federal funding. This dynamic organization offers an opportunity for a Senior Accountant to work closely with the Controller during an exciting chapter of growth.

About this Position:

As the Senior Accountant , you will ensure the financial health and transparency of our operations. You will perform accounting work necessary to maintain the general ledger and produce accurate and timely financial reports. Working under the direction of the Controller, this position coordinates the daily activities of the accounting department to accurately record all general ledger transactions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). You will need a robust knowledge of accounting principles and practices, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality. You will also need to communicate effectively with all levels of staff both within the accounting team and throughout DoveLewis.

Schedule: The schedule for this position will be 4 days per week (32 hours) and is benefits eligible.

Location: This position will work primarily on site (a minimum of 3 days/week) at our downtown Portland, Oregon hospital, but is eligible for some remote work in accordance with the current DoveLewis hybrid work policy.

Salary Range: $69,000 – 82,500 depending on education, certification and experience. (This salary range reflects the 32hr/wk schedule.)

As the ideal candidate for this position, you are a seasoned professional with a strong background in accounting principles and GAAP compliance, as well as some familiarity with nonprofit accounting. You are also a problem-solver, continuous learner, and are adaptable to changing priorities in a growing organization. You thrive in an environment that requires precision and analytical thinking, you have a proven track record of managing and overseeing general ledger operations and smooth monthly financial closing, as well as ensuring the accuracy of financial reports. You have experience identifying and rolling out process improvements and providing guidance to other team members collaboratively. You also have a genuine love and respect for all animals, as well as an appreciation of the human-animal bond.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with an emphasis in accounting.
  • CPA preferred but not required
  • Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in professional level accounting positions.
  • Intermediate or higher skill using accounting software (Netsuite preferred).
  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting is a plus.
  • Any suitable combination of education, industry training, and experience may substitute.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of computer functions and operating software such as MS Office, Word and Outlook.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in MS Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • In depth knowledge of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger functions.
  • In depth and continually evolving knowledge of GAAP.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to solve problems in an analytical and innovative way.
  • Ability to stay organized, meet deadlines and handle a diverse workload.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and report on data.
  • Ability to be flexible in the face of changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset.
