Panels, inverters & batteries: a quick buyer's guide

A solar system has three main parts. Here's what each does and how to spot quality.

The cheapest quote and the best quote are rarely the same. Understanding the three components helps you compare like for like — and avoid paying twice when a bargain system fails early.

1. Solar panels

Panels are the long-life part of your system (25+ years), so quality matters most here. Look for tier-one manufacturers, strong performance warranties (around 25 years), and good efficiency and temperature performance for hot Australian roofs. We install proven brands such as Jinko, JA Solar and Trina.

2. Inverters

The inverter is the brain — it converts your solar into usable power and reports performance. It also works hardest, so it's the component most likely to need attention over time. Choose a reputable brand with solid local support and a 5–12 year warranty (often extendable). String inverters (Sungrow, Fronius, GoodWe) suit most homes; microinverters shine on complex or shaded roofs.

3. Batteries (optional)

If you're storing energy, look for usable capacity that matches your evening usage, a ~10-year warranty, and backup capability if blackout protection matters to you. Popular choices include Tesla Powerwall, Sungrow and Sigenergy. Thanks to the 2026 rebate, adding storage is more affordable than ever — see our battery guide.

Mounting & installation quality

The bits you never see matter too — quality racking, correct roof penetrations and a tidy, compliant install protect your roof and your warranty. A great system installed poorly is a future headache, which is why we use certified installers and back the workmanship.

Rule of thumb: buy the best components you can within budget, installed by an accredited local team. Solar is a 25-year investment — the small extra upfront pays back in reliability.

Questions to ask any installer

  • What exact panel, inverter and battery models are you quoting?
  • What are the warranties — and who services them locally?
  • Is the price after all rebates, fixed and itemised?
  • Are your installers accredited, and do you back the workmanship?
