Under the direction of the Senior Landscape Architect, the Landscape Associate assists in the development and production of a broad range of landscape and irrigation construction management tasks and is responsible for the timely, accurate, and efficient delivery of all assigned work. The Landscape Associate will also assist the District Construction Storm Water Coordinator (DCSWC) with carrying out duties to comply with the requirements of the Caltrans statewide Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP), the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Construction General Permits, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements, and all other related State requirements. The incumbent is expected to travel throughout District 11, which includes San Diego and Imperial Counties. A valid driver's license is required to operate a State-owned or leased vehicle.

Working Conditions

Position(s) located in San Diego County

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Required to travel to and from work. Will work in construction sites and field offices; both indoors and outdoors. May be exposed to various work environments. Outdoor activity includes exposure to moving traffic, working on uneven terrain adjacent to heavy equipment, chemicals, lab conditions, gas, fumes, high decibels of noise, dust, humidity, and weather conditions of extreme heat and/or cold. Work indoors includes performing tasks related to contract administration, documentation, and/or communication with other personnel; the employee will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. May require working in the field at night occasionally. May be required to travel locally, and rarely to other areas of the state for training.

Will be required to use a state-issued cell phone and vehicle responsibly in conformance with the Department’s policies. Must respond timely during duty hours. Periodic communication may be warranted during off-hours for purposes of emergency response as it relates to their construction projects.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) completion of educational courses as specified in the Class Specification (link available in the Minimum Requirements section).

The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required to be considered for an interview. Failure to include and complete the SOQ may result in disqualification for interview. The SOQ must be no more than two pages in length, typed in 12-point Arial font, and single-spaced. It should address the following items:

  1. Describe your education, knowledge, and/or experience the development and construction of Landscape and Irrigation projects; irrigation and planting design principles; plans and technical specifications, including erosion control plans and specifications; construction cost estimates.
  2. Describe/provide examples of your knowledge of Storm Water Management Plans (SWMP) and its application during construction for compliance; describe your knowledge of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
  3. Describe/provide examples of your experience with general office software and the ability to adapt to new specific software tools; ability to apply policies and procedures essential to water pollution control. Describe your knowledge of the practices essential in the development of highway planting and irrigation projects.
  4. Describe/provide examples of your ability to manage an individual task or components related to implementing water pollution control in construction activities and/or Highway Planting projects and assist in the construction management, inspection, and completion. Describe your experience organizing internal and external stakeholders to complete tasks required to meet permit requirements.
  5. Describe/provide examples of your experience with both written and verbal communication to management, staff, and stakeholders. Describe/provide examples of your experience with the development of written reports and technical papers, estimates. diaries, and technical papers.
  6. Describe/provide examples of your knowledge and application of effective leadership skills; experience in planning, organizing, and/or conducting meetings, experience organizing training efforts to educate and inform a team.
