How rooftop solar actually works
Panels on your roof turn sunlight into electricity. An inverter converts it into the type of power your home uses. Your house draws on that free solar first; any extra is exported to the grid (you're paid a small feed-in tariff for it), and when the sun isn't shining you simply pull from the grid as normal — or from a battery if you have one.
What it costs — after rebates
The sticker price isn't what you pay. The federal STC rebate is deducted upfront from your invoice, and if you add a battery the Cheaper Home Batteries program knocks roughly 30% off that too. A quality 6.6 kW system is one of the most popular starting points for NSW homes.
How much can you save?
Most homes cut a big chunk off their power bill by using solar during the day — running the dishwasher, pool pump, air-con and washing while the sun is up. The more of your own solar you use (rather than export), the faster it pays off. Typical payback for a well-sized NSW system is around 3–6 years, after which the power is essentially free for the 25-year-plus life of the panels.
Do you need a battery?
Not to start. Solar alone delivers strong savings. A battery adds night-time savings, peak-rate avoidance and blackout backup — and with the new rebate it's far more attractive than before. Many homeowners go solar first and add a battery later; just ask for a battery-ready inverter so it's easy to expand.
